The location

With its neoclassical style, the Basilica di San Nicolò, the patron saint of Lecco, sailors and boatmen, rises its bell tower over the city, near the lakefront at the northern end of the old town. It stands on the remains of the old city walls that already surrounded the village of Lecco in the 13th century, and it is still possible to see the overhanging walls that support the churchyard and connect to the 15th-century circular tower on the base of which the neo-Gothic bell tower, 96 meters high and known as the «matitone» (big pencil), was erected in the early 20th century, to become the symbol of the city , the second tallest tower in Italy and one of the tallest in Europe.
